John Jacob Loud: Pioneer of the Ballpoint Pen
John Jacob Loud, born on November 2, 1844, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, is best known as the designer of the first ballpoint pen.
Graduating from Harvard Law School in 1866, Loud initially pursued a legal career and later joined his father's banking business.
Invention of the Ballpoint Pen
Despite his banking profession, Loud harbored a passion for invention. In 1888, he filed a patent for a "Reservoir Fountain Pen." Designed specifically for writing on leather surfaces, the pen featured a rotating steel ball retained by a socket.
Although effective on rough surfaces, Loud's pen lacked practical appeal for general writing and failed to gain commercial success.
